History
The designs for our coffee tables were inspired by classic pieces used in the kitchens and living spaces of traditional Korean and Japanese homes.
The hibachi table was a staple in every Japanese home and was the centerpiece to the kitchen. Essentially a "fire pit table” it was primarily used for heating water for tea. It also acted as a sort of coffee table in that it was a gathering place for family conversations, especially at nights and in the winter.
The common Korean rice chest was also the most important piece in the kitchen and as its name implies was used to store rice and other grains. Every kitchen would have one or more of these utilitarian pieces. Built of sturdy pieces of Oriental Pine there was a top that opened for easy access and a simple lock on the front to keep children and animals out.
The chests seem big to us now for their purpose but considering that rice was served three meals a day to very large families, it was an essential part of every kitchen.
