Solid Wood Beams
We start with century old beams that have developed beautiful character and patina through the years. Manufacturers who use new or "green wood" run a high risk of of their pieces warping and cracking. Since all the wood we use is well seasoned, these factors are not an issue.
The woods we work most with are Gingko and Elm. Gingko has a smooth variegated look that resembles Maple, while Elm has a strong swirling grain that closely mimics Oak. Most pieces are available in either wood, and some pieces are available with burl inlays.
A hand-rubbed stain is minimally applied, followed by a coat of oil-based urethane for protection. The result is a low gloss look that emphasizes the wood grain of each piece. You can choose from our 6 Custom Stains plus Red or Black Lacquer. You can also choose to have your piece two-tone in any of our stains.
In the case of our Kuryo collection, the lacquer is hand-rubbed and subtly distressed on the edges, adding to the elegance and character of the piece.
You can also choose from 3 different traditional Japanese handle styles in Iron or Brass. Unique hinges, pulls and rings are also available
