Flexible furniture for a flexible lifestyle

The guiding element behind all our furniture is flexibility – that’s why all our designs are based on stand-alone pieces that work beautifully together.

Our Mizuya Cabinets are two-piece modular units – stack them or separate them, the choice is yours. You can have them custom-made, mix-and-match them with other designs, and order single modules as islands, counters, or hanging cabinets.

Because they are unfitted you can move them around and adapt them for any purpose. So 10 years down the road, if you feel like a change you can move the cabinet to the bedroom as a wardrobe – or if you buy a new home, you can take them with you when you move.

History

Japanese Kitchen Cabinets and Korean Kitchen Chests have a rich history and are very adaptable to Western applications.

The Mizuya Kitchen Cabinet was an important part of every traditional Japanese kitchen. Constructed of thick solid beams of wood, it was meant to be durable and to provide much needed storage. The extended beams and iron rivets on the doors speak of its strength. It was built with sliding doors (hinges were very rare at the time) with big openings and a compliment of large and small drawers. The long thin drawers would have been used to store chopsticks.

The cabinetry had a purposefully asymmetrical look. This was meant to reflect nature as the Japanese understood nature was beautiful because of its imperfect aesthetic.

The most common Korean Kitchen Cabinet was actually more of a chest and it was used to store rice and other grains. Every kitchen would have one or more of these and they would be very utilitarian. Built of sturdy pieces of Oriental Pine there was a top that opened for easy access and a simple lock on the front to keep children and animals out.

The chests seem big to us now for their purpose but considering that rice was served three meals a day to very large families, it was an essential part of every kitchen.
