This small Choba Dansu (merchant's chest) has an assortment of drawers that would have been used to store a merchant's most important documents and valuable goods. A century later it serves a similar purpose - its varied storage is ideal for jewelry, lingerie and other smalls.
Like all tansu, the focus is on the natural beauty of the materials - in this case antique brass warabite hardware and Kiri wood. This compliments the patina the wood has developed giving it a light and natural look.
The hardware flows around the sides of the cabinet - this along with the dovetail joints makes the piece incredibly sturdy. The sides also feature brass handles for ease of transportation.
