Keeping Warm with Hibachi

Hibachi are all about radiating warmth.

After all, it literally means “fire pit” in Japanese -- that’s just what it is, loosely defined. Traditionally, a hibachi can be bowl-shaped, made of ceramic or metals, and it can also look like a table with a pit in the middle framed by a wide wooden ledge. Historically these had been used as heaters in Japanese homes, which typically didn’t have centralized heating.

Greentea Design’s Hibachi Coffee Table is inspired by these traditional hibachi. Although today, the copper pit with its glass top is generally used to showcase some objet d’arts.

Beyond its mundane function of warming a space, traditionally the hibachi had a higher purpose: facilitating closeness among members of a household. In the cold of winter people can’t help but gather around a source of warmth, and from this physical proximity arises the emotional intimacy, feeling warmth fuels warm feelings, fostered by shared stories, smiles and hugs. Outsiders are invited and enclosed in this cozy cocoon. Should guests come calling, the coals in the hibachi pit also serve to keep water-filled kettles hot and ready for tea, which is a social event in itself.

But then again, this particular Hibachi Coffee Table fulfills its purpose of warming you up just by occupying a space in your living room. It simply is a thing of beauty. A work of craftsmanship, of woodworkers and metalworkers who strive to elevate nature’s exquisite materials to even higher heights, to bring warm beauty into the home. So whether its pit contains coals or curios underneath a sheet of glass, warm fuzzy feelings are always a given.
