Symbolism
Symbolism was prevalent in Korean furniture - auspicious signs such as turtles, cranes and butterflies were frequently used.
Seemingly minute details often represented more than just a visual effect. For example, the quantiy of loops on a door was associated with the desirable number of children. If those loops were arranged in the form of a bird's tail, it represented one's success.
The fish (a symbol of fertility), and the crane (a symbol of long life) were often carved on the locks of chests.
